Diana Nyad is planning to swim 103 miles from Cuba to Florida this summer at the age of 62. Nyad has named the endeavor the “Xtreme Dream” and will be speaking at an upcoming celebration of aging.
To Diana Nyad, age is merely a number.
This summer, the 62-year-old will swim 103 miles from Cuba to Florida in an endeavor she named the “Xtreme Dream.” She’s made attempts before but fell short for a variety of reasons including strong currents, bad weather and jellyfish stings. Now, she’s in St. Martin training again for the physically taxing pursuit.
“I chose this to feel alive and to remind myself that this is the way to live,” she said. “It’s more than a mere sporting event. It’s the metaphor for chasing one’s dreams.”
On Tuesday, the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the International Swimming Hall of Fame member will speak at Lifespan’s Celebration of Aging.
Nyad, who has worked as a sports television and radio journalist for 30 years, said attendees can expect to cry during her talk — at touching tales of vulnerability and after bouts of laughter.
